Project Description: This project entailed the removal and replacement of the existing Tribesman footbridge serving the NUIG Rowing Club. Initial enabling works included the set-up of a safe system of working to ensure that all health and safety measures were established prior to commencement of Works. This included
- Working at height
- Working in close proximity and over a water course,
- Working in an environmentally sensitive areas requiring strict pollution control
- A safe compound with safe and adequate compound perimeter
- Working close to live services
- Heavy lifting
All necessary environmental protection measures were established, ensuring that the existing watercourse below (Canal Race) was protected. A tree survey was carried out by an approved Arborist to ascertain extent of any essential tree removal and pruning required to allow for clearance in the tree canopy for the installation of the new bridge. Demolition and removal works were executed in accordance with detailed approved Method Statements. Works included the removal of existing live foul pipe, removal of fencing, careful demolition and removal of the existing steel bridge, railing and associated concrete buttress supports etc. The new 8m long, 2m wide, 300mm deep pre-cast concrete slab was lifted into place by crane and bedded onto new concrete pad buttresses. New PPC galvanised steel balustrading and handrails were fixed to the concrete slab and new 2m high palisade fencing system with matching gates was erected. The Works were successfully carried out over a total period of 3 weeks.
