Refurbishment & extension St Joseph’s Building, Kylemore Abbey, Galway
The purpose of the project was to create a vibrant, educational, intellectual and spiritual Centre for students. St Joseph’s Building was designed as a student facility where students from Notre Dame University US could come to Ireland to foster international connectivity.
The project included the refurbishment and restoration of part of the existing building to include student accommodation, study centre, lecture rooms, IT and computer Hub, kitchen, offices, lounge/dining and recreational areas. the construction of fire escape stairs, alterations to window openings and landscaping.
Located next to Kylemore Lake and in an SAC, particular emphasis was given to preserving and maintaining the sensitive nature of the landscape. The programme involved extensive planning and logistics in that access for materials and equipment etc., was limited to specific times due to tour busses and pedestrians visiting the Tourist Information Centre.
Phase 2 of the project included an additional floor to St Joseph’s building to incorporate additional living space. It included access stairs and associated alterations to the existing building.
